02 Computer Setup

Type of computer (think about expansion)

When deciding what computer or parts to go with for building, we highly recommend that you get a mid-tower or bigger computer. The mid-tower will allow you to have plenty of space for a beefy graphics card and fit the capture card in. The initial cost of building a computer that can easily run everything is going to be expensive, but well worth the money so you might not have to upgrade later. The computer is going to be running a lot of stuff on it all at one time, so you want to make sure that everything inside of the computer can handle the massive load that it is being put under.

RAM

In our research of Virtual Production, we have found that 32GB of RAM should be a bare minimum for working with this technology. If you plan to do Virtual Production small scale, 32GB will work just fine for your endeavor. However the more RAM that you can get would be better as you are using a lot of resources, and real time compositing takes a lot to process.

Graphics Card

Running environments in UE5 can be very demanding, especially if you need to make a full scale city with particles and professional lighting. Our personal recommendation for a GPU would be a 3070 or better, however we know that GPUs can be comparative, so anything that is close to 3070 or above is recommended.

Capture Card

You will need a capture card so that you can get footage onto your computer and UE5. For our research we used a Blackmagic camera, so we use the Blackmagic Design DeckLink 8K Pro as our capture card.
Any capture card should work, as long as it can work with the camera that you are using.
